I met Carol-Ann in 1998 when she went to work for Manatt Phelps. Although I retired from my work with Chuck Manatt the next year, my close friendship with Carol-Ann continued until she returned to Canada this year. During our 20-year friendship, Carol-Ann was a regular at my family weekly Sunday brunches and always brought either donuts or her lemon cake; we celebrated our birthdays together each year with a movie and dinner; and we travelled to Europe together. In the year before retirement, Carol-Ann had great joy in preparing for her next chapter - returning to home - Canada; I was very happy for her. I expected that I would hear from her about her life in Canada for many years to come. I was and am shocked that that she passed so unexpectantly and quickly. I miss her very much.

I had the privilege of working side-by-side with Carol-Ann for 22 years. We spent virtually a lifetime together, all day, every day. We worked, we laughed, we experienced ups and downs together, but most of all, we had a friendship built on mutual respect, trust and shared interests. "Till Death Do Us Part," we always said. Frick and Frack, some said. We used to imagine ourselves older and retired, spending days cooking, doing needlepoint, listening to the music we both loved, going to art shows, and laughing. Things didn't turn out as we planned; funny how life puts people on different paths from what they once imagined. But I always thought that if she pre-deceased me, I would give the eulogy at her funeral, to make sure to tell the world what an amazing and unique person she was.
As anyone who knew Carol-Ann can attest, she was truly one of a kind. She had her very own language (anyone ever have "sips" with her?), nicknames for everyone (I was "Beez," she was "Meez"), and a classic car that it sometimes seemed she loved more than anyone else. Her outlook on life was positive and uplifting. She cared for the elderly, and helped those around her age with dignity (my mother included). She was incredibly funny, generous, with a zest for living, tremendous compassion and an upbeat spirit.
Her passing has left a giant hole in my heart. My greatest sadness in our relationship is that I never got to say good-by properly, and remind her how much she meant to me and how much I genuinely and truly loved our years together.
For anyone who reads this, stop. Think about those you love. Now call them and tell them before it's too late.
Go rest high, Meez. With love, from your Beez.

Carol-Ann and I were colleagues, she a legal secretary in our LA office and I, a legal secretary in our OC office. She was the most pleasant and cheerful person to work with. Although we never met in person, I felt like I knew her all of my life. She was always so positive and uplifting. I was so sad yesterday when I found out she had passed away. I had no idea she was ill. I'm sure that is how she wanted it -- no fussing over her. God needed her in heaven. She truly was a light onto this world. She will surely be missed.

We were office friends for years because we shared the same values of hard work and self-reliance. All that I observed was a person of outstanding virtue whom I admired as an example of not letting any obstacle stand in the way. I had no idea that she was ill and I will miss her very much.

I had the pleasure of working closely with Carol Ann as my executive assistant at the Manatt law firm for nearly a year. She was caring, conscientious and detailed professional. She organized my files, managed my ever changing schedule and shared her joy for life and doing things to perfection. She was a classy lady and is much missed.
